Seniors, beware of common illnesses!

Common illnesses affecting senior citizens include chronic conditions like heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and arthritis, as well as cognitive decline such as dementia and Alzheimer's. Respiratory illnesses like COPD and pneumonia are also prevalent. Additionally, seniors may experience vision and hearing loss, falls, and mental health issues like depression and anxiety.

Heart & Circulatory Health

  • High Blood Pressure (Hypertension)
    Often has no symptoms, but increases stroke and heart attack risk. 
  • Heart Disease
    Includes angina, heart failure, and arrhythmias. 
  • Stroke
    Warning signs: sudden numbness, confusion, trouble speaking. 

Brain & Nerve Health

  • Alzheimer’s Disease & Dementia
    Memory loss, confusion, and changes in personality.

    Tremors, stiffness, and slow movement. 
  • Depression
    Not just sadness—can show up as tiredness, isolation, or irritability.

  • Malnutrition
    Can occur even when eating enough—due to poor nutrient absorption or appetite loss. 
  • Constipation
    Often caused by inactivity, meds, or low fiber. 

Sensory Changes

  • Vision Loss 
  • Cataracts, glaucoma, and macular degeneration. 
  • Hearing Loss
    May lead to social withdrawal or cognitive decline if ignored.

Cancer (Age-Related Risk)

  • More common types include: 
  • Colon cancer 
  • Breast cancer 
  • Prostate cancer 
  • Skin cancer (especially from sun exposure)
    → Regular screenings are key. 

Infections Seniors Are Vulnerable To

  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) – Often causes confusion in older adults. 
  • Shingles – Reactivation of chickenpox virus, very painful. 
  • Influenza – Get a flu shot yearly. 
  • COVID-19 & RSV – Still a concern for older adults; vaccines available.
